Medeu is the largest high-altitude winter sports
complex in the world. Its ice rink is 1,700 metres above sea level. Medeu is situated in the valley of the Malaya Almatinka river, 1,520-1,750 metres above sea level, and surrounded by mountains on all sides - Kimasar to the west, Kab-yrgatau to the east and Kum-belem to the south-east. With an Olympic-size ice rink, areas for pony- and horse-riding, an amusement park, the Hotel Pre-mier-Medeu, a summer pool and an abundance of shashlyk stands, Medeu is a popular place with locals and visitors alike.
The ice rink was built in 1972 in this picturesque gorge 16 km outside Almaty. The mild climate, optimum level of sunshine, low pressure, calm weather and ice made from the purest spring water make Medeu one of the world's top skating rinks, while its setting makes it perhaps the most beautiful. The 10,500-sq.mice rink is the perfect venue for outdoor international competitions in speed skating, figure skating and ice hockey. Over 120 world records have been set here (compared with 40 in Davos)

by the world's top skaters. The ice rink is open to the public between November and March, and skates are available for hire.
Another must-see for tourists is the dam constructed in the Malaya Almatinka valley to
protect Almaty from meltwater floods. This dam actually saved the city from a potentially fatal floodin 1973. Theb walkup 830 steps to the dike is highly recommended, as once you reach the top there are magnificent views of the Zaili Alatau peaks.
Once a year Medeu hosts the international Aziya Dauysy (Voice of Asia) pop festival, which has become a highlight of Kazakhstan's musical life. There are plenty of places to eat and stay up in the mountains. We recommend the traditional dishes at the Kazakh Aul restaurant, designed in the form of a yurt.
